International Tales

When asking a bunch of ERASMUS exchange student about their stay in Sweden, they replied as follows:

Q: What did you find most enjoyable with your stay?

  • So many things… international spirit, swedes, landscapes, semlas, Stockholm. This stay was pure happiness!
  • I loved the international atmosphere: being able to speak English or Swedish everywhere with everyone. The level of the lectures was high and the campus itself is amazingly nice. Sweden is furthermore a wonderful country with astonishing landscapes and a mind-blowing diversity (Bohuslän, Kiruna, the archipelago).
  • I signed up for the KTH Swedish buddies programme and my Swedish buddies were very kind. They organised dinners and outings for me (and other international students that shared the same Swedish buddies). I felt welcomed as a guest there.  :)
  • Meeting a lot of people from all over the world. Knowing the Swedish culture.Swedish girls.
  • - the organisation of my school
    - the accessibility at the facilities ( computer, place to work)
    - the school itself ( the gardens and the buildings are beautiful )
    - the diversity of my courses ( some of them were theoretical, some other more applied)
    - the different places to have lunch and the cafeteria in the library
  • The Swedish way of life and the behaviour of the Swedes.

Q: What was most challenging?

  • I came to Sweden in January and the adaptation to the lack of light was really hard.
  • To understand my courses in English and pass them
  • To ”survive” winter time
  • To find a place to stay for the next year while the KTH accommodation department was hard to have to deal with.
  • To find a place to leave in, SSSB is efficient only  for the third year…
  • To be accepted in a group of sweds, and hence not to stay only with ERASMUS students.
  • Meeting Swedish people!
  • The Swedish language is not so easy but you can manage it with hard work. The most challenging was without any doubt the weather and the darkness. Winter is way too dark and cold for someone who is used to live in the south of France. Fortunately, the snow makes the city really beautiful.

Q: How was the Student Life?

  • It is really hard to get to know and meet Swedes.  That is why having a Swedish buddy is a good opportunity. However, the rest was great: parties, trips, Stockholm, courses, daily life, etc…
  • All the people are actually hyper disposed to start new friendships and the parties are really enjoyable. The melting pot  of cultures and people renders the environment even more interesting and stimulating.
  • It was awwwwwwsome! I couldn’t expect anything better, this was just an unforgettable experience.
  • We are very free when it comes to organize our work in Sweden, thus it is really easy to do all kind of activities. Moreover all exchange students are located on a few different places, thus making it easy to organize parties and activities. Stockholm offers a large number of parties.

Q: Would you recommend studying in Sweden?

  • OF COURSE! KTH is a really competitive school in many fields. The ERASMUS life is the best student experience ever. The rhythm with lectures and seminars is not too dense, so we have time to party and enjoy Sweden. Spring in Stockholm is something I recommend to everyone!
  • If you come outside from North of Europe it’s nice to experience a different climate (though hard in winter) and a different culture. The language is also funny and it’s easy to find many other reasons to like Sweden, as nature, relaxed people, girls…
  • Definitely, and I’ve been doing it since I came back.
  • Yes. The quality of education is good, KTH’s administration efficient, and the country is really enjoyable. I myself will come back for a few more months.
  • Of course I would, and I would recommend also to look for a room/apartment many months before you decide moving to Stockholm.
  • I’d recommend it because KTH has a good level, Stockholm is a really beautiful place to live and to discover and a lot of destinations can be easily reach from there.
  • Sweden is a really good place to study because the organization is very simple and Stockholm offers a lot of activities including many that are not common in other countries such as skiing road trips, boat trips… For this and the fact that Swedes are very friendly and that everyone speaks Swedish I strongly recommend to come to Sweden.

Q: What advise would you give someone who is planing to study in Sweden?

  • Everything about the daily life is easy to organize in Sweden, the only thing you need is a good living-address. Thus, I recommend to contact people who were in Sweden during the previous term, as the student life is really developed among the students; one person usually knows all the interesting tips. [THS International can also help you]
  • Be careful with the accommodations!! Its hard to find one!
  • Sign up on SSSB [for better accommodations].
  • To be prepared for the climate (few hours of sun and very cold during the winter).
  • The weather can be extremely cold for students who originally come from the equatorial areas. You need to prepare yourself with good winter clothings.
  • Get warm socks.
  • To be prepared that Swedes, who are people really friendly when you get to know them, are rather cold when they don’t know you.
  • Get some info about Swedish culture. I find that Swedes tend to be quieter compared to other Europeans. Once you know the culture, it will be easier to deal with the locals.
  • It will be much more economical if you cook your own food because the food price in restaurant are relatively expensive.
  • Discover Scandinavia during your stay.
  • Learn Swedish if you have time and opportunity. By learning the language, we will show respect to the locals’ culture.
  • Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder!
